Leveraging our relationship with the smartphone

Smartphones are a huge part of everyday life. According to analytics firm Flurry, people in the U.S. are spending up to 5 hours per day on mobile devices, the majority of this time being in apps, and with over half (55%) of us checking them within 15 minutes of waking, the influence that they have on us is huge.

The relationship that we have with our smartphones doesn’t stop when we get to work. A study by the Pew Research Center found that 40% of employees use their smartphone for work, with the majority of them doing so without their employer’s knowledge. Staff are having to find workarounds to increase productivity, so why aren’t we leveraging this relationship in order to drive efficiency?

In recent years, the increase in Bring Your Own Device policies have allowed employees to use the device that they are most familiar with to increase productivity with U.S. workers saving an average of 81 minutes per week, whilst saving employers upwards of £250 per employee per year according to a study by Cisco, yet a staggering number of companies still don’t allow them in the workplace!

According to studies, there are 2.8 million people in the U working in retail, 1.7 million in hospitality and almost 600 thousand employed in fitness & sport with a further 2.3 million volunteers in the sector. 83% of the global workforce do not have access to corporate email (Tribe INC) and even less have access to a company computer, yet internal emails and the intranet seem to prevail as the top two preferred methods of internal communication. This in turn can leave those on the front-line in customer facing roles feeling disconnected and with 65% of all lost customers being linked to a disengaged employee (Gallup), something has to be done to ensure that staff have adequate ongoing support and knowledge to deliver on the brand promise.

Jim Shaffer quite rightly stated that “Externally-orientated communication helps create the brand promise, while internally orientated communication helps deliver the brand promise”, however what we are often finding is that there is a disconnect between the two with those at the coal face often not being kept fully up to date or having to find their own workarounds to solve business issues. Messaging apps such as WhatsApp seem to have become a standard for shift cover and updates, taking control firmly out of the hands of the business, meaning that correct processes are often forgotten and important messages are lost in translation, so rather than attempting to stop employees using their smartphones in the working environment, why not embrace it?
